Mr. Velasquez is not a danger to public security,” said Bocanegra.

“However, the facts remain clear: Cain Velasquez is a good man, a devoted father and a respected member of the community. What he and his family have endured a living nightmare, one who did not deserve.

“During all this, Cain showed courage and strength of character. He assumed the responsibility of his actions and was held responsible.

“The phrase handed down today reflects the complexities of the situation and recognizes the man behind the titles. When he is released, he will continue to give an example: protect, contribute and take care of the people surrounding him.”

Dana White’s letter

Following the arrest of Velasquez in 2022, White was among the many to write letters in support of the former champion. This is what White wrote

To the honorable judge of the Superior Court of Santa Clara,

I write this reference in full knowledge of the current accusations of Cain Velasquez of attempted murder and aggression. I was amazed in learning about these accusations against him, since I am completely out of the character for the man who I was proud to say that he was twice champion of the UFC maximum weights.

I have known Mr. Velasquez for more than 15 years and during his period as an active athlete with UFC, he represented our company with dignity and has always treated the others with respect. It was an example model of how a professional athlete should go, projecting a positive image in the UFC fan base. Mr. Velasquez was extremely professional and went well to establish a connection with our fans and promote the sport of mixed martial arts, not only as a product of entertainment, but also as a character-building discipline.

As a Mexican American, Mr. Velasquez was proud of his inheritance and has never transmitted the opportunity to visit Mexico on behalf of our company and demonstrate his gratitude to Mexican fans for their support.

The people who know him best describe him as a humble and spoken man who was very dedicated to his family, including his wife and two children.

If given the opportunity, I am sure that Mr. Velasquez would only want to return to his family and continue to have a positive impact on his community.

I sincerely ask to take it into consideration while judging the next steps in this process concerning Mr. Velasquez.

If you want to confirm one of the previous ones, do not hesitate to contact me.

He added: “Whatever the field feels correct for what I have to do, I will do it with my head and I am not yet and not playing the game of guilt.

“It was I who did it and I reacted that way.”

Velasquez won 14 of his 17 professional fights during his MMA career, 12 of which came to direct elimination.

He beat Lesnar in 2010 to win the title of UFC maximum weights and was again champion in 2012 by beating Junior Dos Santos in a revenge after losing his belt.

He announced his retirement in October 2019, eight months after being beaten by Francis Ngannou at their main event.

In 2022, following his arrest, the UFC offered his public support to Velasquez, including a letter from the CEO Dana White, who was presented to the court during his case. In the letter, Velasquez was described a “example of a model of how a professional athlete should take”.

Other support letters came from the former champions Daniel Cormier, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Kamaru Usman.
